The bathroom is one of the most expensive but also most important parts of any renovation. A poorly executed bathroom is a costly mistake — problems with watertightness, moisture or drainage can show up years later, and the repair is expensive.
How much does a bathroom renovation in Prague cost?
| Scope | Indicative price |
|---|---|
| Small bathroom (3–5 m²), economical solution | 80,000–130,000 CZK |
| Small bathroom (3–5 m²), mid-range standard | 120,000–200,000 CZK |
| Larger bathroom (6–9 m²), mid-range standard | 180,000–320,000 CZK |
| Bathroom with premium sanitary ware and tiles | 250,000–500,000+ CZK |
Prices include labour and materials (wall tiles, floor tiles, sanitary ware, plumbing). They do not include furniture and mirrors.
What changes in a bathroom renovation?
We always recommend: plumbing (old steel pipes corrode), drains (original cast-iron drains are often over-sealed and narrowed), waterproofing (without proper waterproofing under the tiles, moisture appears within ten years), electrical installation in the bathroom (protective zones, moisture classes).
Usually changed: wall and floor tiles, sanitary ware (bath, shower enclosure, washbasin, WC), taps, ventilation, lighting.
Optional: underfloor heating, thermostatic taps, bathroom furniture and mirrors with a cabinet.
Typical problems in a bathroom renovation
Poor waterproofing — the most common mistake. Waterproofing must be done before the tiles on the floor and in the corners. Without it, water penetrates into the substrates and causes moisture in adjacent rooms or in the apartments below you.
Relocating the drain without a plan — moving a shower or bath by more than 1 metre requires re-routing the drain. In a panel apartment this is technically difficult and often requires the building manager’s approval.
Underestimated scope — a renovation “of just the tiles” often turns into a complete renovation when the old tiles are removed. Under the old tiles you find moisture, rot or failing drains. Keep a reserve of 15–20 % of the bathroom budget.
Incorrect floor slope — the bathroom floor must slope towards the drain (1–2 % towards the outlet). If the slope is missing, water stands on the floor.
How to choose sanitary ware and tiles?
Sanitary ware: bath vs. shower enclosure — a shower enclosure is more practical, a bath increases appeal for families. A wall-hung WC allows easier cleaning but requires an installation block (false wall). A console washbasin without a cabinet visually enlarges the space.
Wall and floor tiles: large formats (60×60, 60×120) visually enlarge the space and have fewer joints. Light colours enlarge, dark ones reduce the space. Slip resistance of floor tiles: R9 for bathrooms, R10 for shower enclosures.
What to keep in mind when planning the timing?
A bathroom renovation takes 3–5 weeks. During the renovation the bathroom is unavailable — think of alternatives. Order materials 2–3 weeks in advance because of the risk of stock shortages.
